The sun was still fairly high in the sky, but within a few hours it would be replaced by the moon. The full moon. Joel was just wandering around aimlessly. He only worked at night, so he had all day to do whatever he wanted. Not that he would be at work tonight. No. He had called in sick, which was actually pretty close to the truth. Luckily for him, his boss had not noticed the pattern in which Joel seemed to miss work. Not yet anyway. People had all these things like calendars and clocks, yet they didn’t seem to keep track of time very well. They just didn’t pay attention.
So far, Joel had spent his day walking around the town, stopping in random stores to look around. It was boring, but he couldn’t think of anything else to do. He supposed he could start heading out to the forest. Though, it was still so early and it would be at least another hour or two before the sun set. It sounded a little childish, but he didn’t want to be alone for that long. So, instead he was just wasting time exploring the town square, something he had already done a thousand times. Right now, he was in a store called Znader’s Racks.
Just as he was about to exit the store, he caught a familiar scent that made him stop in his tracks. It took him a few moments to realize who it belonged to, but then an image popped into his mind. The girl from the night before, which come to think of it... he still didn’t know her name. He looked around, blue eyes trying to find the face that matched the scent. And then, he spotted her. To his surprise, she was working at the counter. So, she worked here, huh? Instead of leaving the store like Joel had been planning, he continued to browse around. Eventually, he found some cheap looking watch.
Joel dropped the watch onto the counter, shoving it toward Carla. He didn’t really need it. He wasn’t even the type of guy to really wear watches anyway. Time was insignificant to him. But, it gave him an excuse to talk to her. Or at least just say hi. He was pretty sure she would rather not see him again. I mean, she hadn’t seemed to like him much. But, oh well, it was too late now. “Hey there,” Joel said with a friendly grin. He leaned onto the counter, using it as a sort of arm rest. He figured that she would be surprised to see him. I mean, it wasn’t like it was a miracle or anything. The town was pretty small. But still.

Saturday, a day Carla started work a little later in the day she went in at noon. It was the only day her mother let her sleep in-which was weird since Saturdays were what people called “shopping days”. Today they got a shipment of new things that she could put out. Her mother had started it that morning just a few things here and there. To Carla’s surprise there were a few people in the shop. Not just workers but people. It amazed her. They must have something cool coming in for this month. Carla wasn’t going to lie she did like going throw what they got.
The store was more of a punk style of clothing but had a few things for every style within the small shop. Well it wasn’t all that small but it wasn’t all that big either. It was just the right size for a locally owned store. With that Carla was in the back for a little, working with the twins since her mother’s friend was here helping with pricing. Carla hated the twins, one boy and one girl together they were the devil. There was no joke to that without the eye of their mother on them they do anything to make trouble. It was annoying, Carla had to chase after them whenever the mother told her to take them to her park.
Lucky for her the mother came back to do some more things in the back letting Carla take up a box to the front counter. “Mum, I’ll take this for a little.” She said giving her mother a small smile before placing the box on the floor. Carla hadn’t bothered to look around the shop to see if she knew anyone. After all she would rather not get suck talking with someone. The plus side of her being busy today, is that she didn’t have to think of what happened last night. Oh Hale had been pissed and man did they have a good argument in the car. She could only wonder if she’d ever get to say sorry to that guy. She still felt bad about how much of a freak out she had on him.
Pushing a few things under the counter did she hear a click on the counter. Just as she peeked up to see what it was did she hear the voice. Her eyes then landed on that male from the other night. “Oh!” she said slightly shocked before standing up quickly. “Hello.” She said feeling embarrassed and weirded out by how she had just been thinking about him and now he was here. “Long time, no see.” She said sheepishly. She then shifted her weight onto one side feeling slightly uncomfortable.
She knew this was her chance to say sorry, but how would she do that? She had been a real bitch last night. So running her hand through her hair did she spot the watch and knew she had to do her job and maybe work her way towards the sorry. “Is this everything?” She asked taking a hold of the watch and giving him a small smile that didn’t touch her eyes.

“Oh! Hello. Long time, no see.” Joel’s grin widened at the surprised look on the girl’s face. "So we meet again." Obviously, she had not been expecting to see him here. Well, he hadn’t been expecting to bump into her either. He was just glad that she didn’t look pissed or anything today. He guessed it was probably because they were in a public area rather than some deserted parking lot. For once, he had run into someone under normal circumstances. He was also relieved that she acknowledged him. Truthfully, he had been a little afraid that she would just pretend she had never seen him before. Rejection stung.
Maybe she just realized that he wasn’t the bad guy now. After seeing him fight the real villains. Not that he held anything against her. She’d had every right to yell at him. It may have pissed him off a bit at the time, but she hadn’t been in the wrong. People usually got the wrong first impression of him anyway. He was used to it. It wasn’t that he looked like a criminal or anything. He was just always in the wrong place at the wrong time. And of course, first impressions are almost always wrong. They really are. It happens every time. You'll meet someone and they'll end up being th exact opposit what you expected.
“Is this everything?” she asked, bringing him out of his thoughts. “Yep,” Joel said and nodded. She was probably wondering why the heck he was buying a watch like that. I mean, even Joel’s fashion sense wasn’t that awful. There were plenty of other things in the store, way better things. He’d simply picked the least expensive thing. He hadn’t had the guts to just walk up and say hello to her, so he’d gone and wasted his money on some random item. And, now that he thought about it... He couldn’t help but realize how lame that was. He sighed inwardly. Well, at least it seemed to be working.
He had to think of something to say though. Otherwise she would just ring up his watch, put it in some sort of little bag, and he’d be on his way again. Ugh. He was no good at small talk. “I don’t believe,” he suddenly said, “That I got a proper introduction yesterday.” He lifted his head, his misty blue eyes meeting hers. He was getting kind of tired of calling her ‘that’ girl, and he thought that a name would be nice. A name to match with her face. With her scent. She seemed like she was in a better mood today, so he didn’t think his being friendly would hurt. He just wanted to chat a little. Make sure she was alright from the other day.

Carla had already scanned over the watch not really looking at what it looked like or who it was even for. Carla had learned not to look at what people were buying unless they were a chatty one. After all she had been working here for about four years and really life had more important things in it then talking with a stranger about what they got and why it was so great a pick. It was just bull shit conversation, pointless.
Looking up she was just about to say the price of the watch but seemed Joel cut her to the punch when it came to talking. She closed her lips pursing them slightly. Pushing back a piece of her straight brown hair did she give him a small smile. Right now Carla couldn’t tell if he was just being nice or trying to hit on her. Most males hit on her in a different way so she was going to go with nice. If he was trying to hook up with her, all she had to do was call Hale. After all he was looking for some low-class jerk to beat up. Not too badly like the night before, but just for the hell of it.
Only as she thought about it, she wasn’t sure who would win that fight, Joel had shown that he was pretty damn strong. “Oh, I guess that didn’t happen.” She started off letting her eyes wander back towards the glass counter and other to the window. She was fighting off her shyness and trying not to be awkward. So she was going to take her time with this. There was no line so it should be fine. “I’m Carla. And I don’t believe, I know your name either.” She said keep her tone soft and sweet. She was being nice, showing that she was clearly not about to freak out on him again.
. . . He had just ran into at the wrong time and just happened to jog a few memories. Maybe if he had been female, she wouldn’t have had freaked out so much with him. She may have calmed down a little faster too. Hale really was the only reason for her calming last night. It was weird really, but she didn’t put much thought into it. “Ah, your total is five dollars and seventy-eight cents.” Did she finish off before picking up the watch again and reach to the side were the wall was for a bag.

“I’m Carla.” Her tone was soft now, even a little sweet. Big change from the other night. “That’s a nice name...” He said it quietly, mostly just to himself, though it was probably loud enough for her to hear. “And I don’t believe, I know your name either.” That was a good sign, right? That she asked for his name in return. “Joel,” he said and held out his hand for her to shake. Most people didn’t really do that anymore, but Joel had been brought up differently. Be polite. Have manners. He might have spent a hundred years hibernating in the forest, but he hadn’t forgotten simple things like that, even if the rest of society had. “Nice to meet you.”
Well, that was a start, right? Now they were on a first name basis at least. That was something. He wasn’t sure if she was still ticked at him for the other night or not. I mean, she was being really nice to him, but acting wasn’t that hard. Heck, Joel did it all the time. For all he knew, she was only talking to him like this because they were in a store, and he was pretty sure that yelling at the customers was a pretty good way to get fired.
“Ah, your total is five dollars and seventy-eight cents.” Joel flipped open his wallet. All he had was a ten, so that’s what he gave her. “Keep it,” he added and held up his hands so she wouldn’t be able to try and hand it back to him. “Just think of it as...” he trailed off, seeming to think. “Think of it as an apology gift. For... uh, you know, freaking you out the other night.” He took a step back and gave her a half smile. He knew that money was no apology, but he really didn’t care if she kept the change. Not like he would need it tonight anyway. “I am sorry though,” he added, a little quieter, voice more serious now.
Well, not that he’d said that, he wasn’t really sure what else there was to say. If there was one thing Joel couldn’t do, it was hold up a decent conversation. Coming back to civilization wasn’t as easy as he had thought. It was as if he had forgotten basic skills. Skills that should have came naturally to him. Besides, he couldn’t stay around here much longer anyway. As much as he wanted to, he knew that he should probably start heading out soon. He had a long walk ahead of him. “Eh, I should probably go, huh?” He turned and started to walk away, but then he seemed to realize he was forgetting something. Joel turned around, looking a little embarrassed, and slowly walked back to the counter. "Oh, um... hey, can I have my watch?" he asked with a sheepish laugh.

Joel’s voice dropped down and Carla knew she had pretty good hearing and had no need to lend closer to hear him. Sure she had to listen a little harder, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t put the words together from what she got. She felt herself smile a little. She couldn’t help herself, Hale was wearing on her. “I think so too, different I must say.” Before giving of a small soft laugh. She was in a much better mood now and hoped Joel would notice that. Maybe she wouldn’t have to say sorry but still she really should repay him for last night. Even after she was a total bitch he stayed and kicked some serious ass.
Shortly after getting his name did he hold out his hand. For a moment Carla blinked at it in surprise. Did anyone really shake hands anymore unless it was business or they were old? Damn he must be from some really up tight family. But she wasn’t about to be rude again and let her hand take a hold of his and shook in slightly awkwardly.
That’s when she let her hand drop down before rubbing the back of her neck. She hoped she didn’t seem like some stupid girl, Carla was really smart, but not people smart. He may have learned that from last night. Lucky for Carla things move back towards the buying of the watch and she could do her job and maybe get out of her awkward state. Only as he pushed the ten onto the counter things got awkward again. “Keep it.” Was the two words that made her want to push the exacta cash at him anyways.
“Thanks?” She said not really sure what to say, she just put it all into the totally. It’s not like her mother would not give Carla money. “You know, you really-“ she started off staying really not liking how he was giving her money after she was a total bitch. Life was just sucking now but what made it all the worst he was trying to say sorry to her. What was wrong with this guy? She shook her head and sighed. She then looked at Joel with a straight face. This was something Hale would do to Carla.
“Why the hell are you saying sorry?” She started off before letting out a short laugh. “I’m sorry. I totally freaked out on you. I really am sorry. I. . . just don’t like the dark, and people.” She said rubbing the back of her neck giving off a sheepish smile and a shrug of her shoulders. “I really think I should make it up to you. Like I feel really bad about it. I’m not as mean as you may think.” She carried on before letting out another deep sigh and let her hand drop back to her side.
Only that was when Carla noticed that Joel was trying to leave. She still had the bag in her hand. “Joel.” She started off but he seemed to notice that he had forgotten it. She gave him a weak smile that was masked the sadness in her eyes. “Yeah you can. Here.” She said before letting her hands reach across the glass counter to give him the bag. Biting down on her lip she knew she had to do something know or she would most likely never see him again.
“Ah, hey? Do you think we could. Ah. Talk?”

“Why the hell are you saying sorry?” Joel tensed. For a second, he thought she might go off on him again. But then to his relief she let out a sort of laugh, and he relaxed again. He was about to tell her some lame reason why he was sorry, but she beat him to it. “I’m sorry. I totally freaked out on you. I really am sorry. I. . . just don’t like the dark, and people.” He was a little surprised she had actually apologized too, but he was relieved. That meant she really did forgive him for freaking her out. He felt better knowing that. “Don’t worry about it,” he told her easily, waving his hand as if to dismiss it. “Apology accepted.”
“I really think I should make it up to you. Like I feel really bad about it. I’m not as mean as you may think.” Joel just shook his head. “Nah, you don’t have to do that,” he told her. “I’m a big tough guy. I can handle it.” He put a half grin on his face. But, really... It was surprising how scary girls could be when they tried. It really was. And, today... it was as if she was a whole different person. He figured he’d just run into her at a bad time yesterday. After all, everyone had their off days, right? In any case, he was glad to see that she was doing better today. "I have a sister, so I'm used to it."
He had started to walk away after that, only to realize he had forgotten his watch. He ended up moving back to the counter a little awkwardly. “Yeah you can. Here.” He took the bag with a small laugh. “Eh, thanks,” he mumbled. “Wouldn’t want to forget that, now would I...” he added quietly, folding the bag up and tucking it into his pocket. He had a habit of doing that. He’d just get so caught up in his thoughts that he would forget what was going on around him. He really needed to stop that. It would take some getting used to though. When he’d been living in the forest, that’s all he’d had to do. Just think. Get tangled up in his thoughts. Lost in them. It made time seem to move faster. Without that voice in hi head, there was only silence, and the silence drove him insane. Now, however, now that he had come back to civilization, he needed to grow out of that.
A voice brought Joel out of his thoughts. “Ah, hey? Do you think we could, ah, talk?” Joel lifted his head, startled blue eyes meeting Carla’s. He blinked, looking a little taken aback. She wanted to talk to him? “Uh...yeah, sure,” he said, mumbling a little. Why did she want to talk to him? She’d already gotten in her apology. What else was there to say? Unless she wanted to like... hang out or something. Whatever the humans were calling it. “You bet,” he added. This time when he spoke, he sounded more sure of himself, more upbeat. “I’ve got..." he paused as a slight smile lit his face, "all the time in the world.”

Carla felt a brighter smile pull up on her lips as he took her sorry. It made her feel a hell lot better. She was normally okay with putting people down, but when someone doesn’t seem like a total jerk get hurt. And last night she had been really mean. The mean-ish she’s been in a very long time. She doesn’t get that rude ever, not even if she’s fighting with someone. “You may be touch seeing you kicked some ass last night, but holding what I said not so much. I still don’t feel right about saying it.” She said mumbling the last part to herself.
Joel then added himself having a sister. “Really how old is she? Maybe I’ll know her, well that is if she lives in this crap town.” She said finally letting him have his watch and with that did she push her elbows onto the counter and place her face in her palms. She was feeling a lot better now and now that she was looking at him and taking in the way he acted he really didn’t seem like a total creep like he had last night. Maybe she just wanted to get home that badly that she was hating the world. She really should do something about that. . . nah. Safer hating it then trusting everyone.
Carla watch Joel push the watch into his pocket and he seemed to do it a rather awkward manner, maybe she wasn’t the only one in the damned town that was awkward. It would be a reasoning behind why at first she didn’t like him. Awkward people usually tended to give off odd vibes at first. With Carla thinking about that she didn’t notice how Joel seemed to go off in thought before answering her question. Only when he did her slightly bigger smile stayed on her lips. “Sweet, hold on a minute.” She said holding up a finger before running into the back.
She could hear a soft ding of the door at the front just as the door to the black closed on her. She was maybe in the back for about a minute a little longer, only when she came back out she held a coat in her arms and her mother was trailing behind her looking for this boy that Carla was going with. As her mom when to the front counter Carla when up to Joel. “We can go now.” She said a little breath less from running around in the back so she could leave. With that she gave her mom a small wave as she was helping out a costumer with finding something and pushed the door open to hear the soft ding.
((Sorry about the length >< i know it's not all that short, but it should be longer, I'm just not feeling too hot today D: Stupid cold has gotten to me.))

“Really how old is she? Maybe I’ll know her, well that is if she lives in this crap town.” Joel instantly regretted what he'd said. Damn. He should've kept his mouth shut. Joel hesitated, but only for a moment. "She's twenty. Though... I doubt you'd know her. She moved away from here a few months ago." He paused, and then added with a forced but convincing grin, "I envy her." He had no idea why he had told Carla he had a sister. I mean, he hadn't intended it to be a lie. Sometimes he just... forgot. Forgot that he didn't have a sister anymore. He hadn't for at least a hundred years now.
Carla disappeared into the back of the store for a moment, leaving Joel standing by the counter alone. He shifted his feet, just kind of staring at the ground. She said that she wanted to talk to him, so obviously he had proven he wasn't some psyhco like the other guys in the parking lot. Now, he couldn't help but wonder what exactly it was she wanted to talk about. Or... more, if she even had anything in mind. Joel, personally, was not a very good speaker. His mind was always racing with possible comments and remarks, but for some reason he had trouble turning those into words. Very few of them ever made it past his lips.
"We can go now." Joel looked up to see that Carla had returned. An older woman took her place at the counter, and the next thing he knew he and Carla were headed out of the store. Joel followed her, stepping out into the sunlight. He blinked a few times, eyes adjusting. Slowly, his gaze traveled up to the sky, squinting his sensitive eyes against the bright light. It shouldn't do any harm. If the sun was this bright, that meant there was still a while until night. After they had finished talking, which he figured wouldn't take too long, he'd head out to the woods. It wasn't something he was looking forward to though, and he quickly tried to push that to the back of his mind.
"So, where to?" he asked, glancing over at Carla. He wasn't sure if she wanted to get something to eat or just wander around. He had no clue. He hardly ever did anything social. What did humans do for fun? What did they talk about? The only time he really interacted with people was at his job. Because, well, if he didn't he would probably be fired. And, honestly, those people never had anything worth listening to to talk about. Outside of work, Joel usually just kept to himself. He hadn't been speaking with anyone until lately. It wasn't safe for someone like him to be associating with the humans. Oh, what had he gotten himself into?
( Eh, being sick sucks...>< But no worries. It was fine lol =] )

Coming outside Carla looked around the sun was up and very bright for this time of day. She blinked a few times clearing the bright light from her eyes the best she could. Pushing her hands into he pockets of her coat did she start walking off. Only she really had no idea where to go, she didn’t do this type of thing. Hopeful Joel would have some ideas in mind. Glancing over her shoulder a small smile still on her lips did she see Joel was right after her.
Only what he said to her was something she didn’t think would first come to mind. After all she had just been at work and only to come out the back ready to leave. Now wouldn’t that be a little odd? Coming to a stop did she turn around with a small shrug. “I don’t know, have any ideas?” She asked before looking pass him at the shop. “Mum says I can take the car if I want, so we don’t have to walk if you got an idea for something farther away.” She said before turning around and started walking again. She wasn’t really sure if she was doing this hang out thing right but she hoped she was. Carla hadn’t hung out with anyone other than Hale and family really doesn’t count as hanging out with people.
That’s when Carla felt the keys in her pocket and let out a small sigh she wondered if Tristan knew she was old enough to drive. She did look younger than her age, she was eighteen yet looked sixteen. It was annoying she finally just got over getting pulled over. All the cops in this town knew who she was now so they didn’t pull her over unless there really was something with her driving. Which there never was. Carla was the smart driver in the family. Hale took after their mother, need for speed. Coming up to the car did she turn around and lean back on it again, not a smile on her lips. She was more in a neural type of mood now. “Sorry if I’m bad at this. Brother is my best friend. Shows that I don’t get out much.” She said giving Joel a sheepish smile.

“I don’t know, have any ideas?” Joel wanted to pull his hair out. Oh great, so she was asking him for ideas. Honestly, he had no clue where to go. She was the human here. She was the one who wanted to talk. And yet, she was making him decide where to go and what to do. She was probably only trying to be nice, letting him choose like that. He doubted she knew the turmoil that was sparked in his mind, as he began to desperately think of somewhere to go. “Uh, hmm...”
“Mum says I can take the car if I want, so we don’t have to walk if you got an idea for something farther away.” Joel lifted an eyebrow, distracted from his thoughts. “Oh, you drive, huh?” he asked, glancing over at her. Well, it wasn’t like it was that shocking. Joel could drive too. Not that he had ever bothered to get a license, but it wasn’t that hard. Kind of stressful with all the cars coming at you, but it wasn’t so bad in this town. He was just a little surprised because Carla looked pretty young. Now that he thought about it, he had no idea how old she was. Age had never really mattered to Joel. When you were practically immortal, you didn’t really think about it much.
“Sorry if I’m bad at this. Brother is my best friend. Shows that I don’t get out much.” They had arrived at her car now, back in the parking lot in which they had met. “Eh, don’t worry about it... I don’t really get out much either,” Joel confessed with a small, rubbing the back of his neck. That was the truth too. He never did anything like this. Now he remembered why. Because his tongue always got tied up and he couldn’t think of a thing to say. At least Carla didn’t seem to be that experienced at it either. That made him feel a little more at ease.
“Now, uh, let’s see... Where to go.” He thought for a few moments, and then an idea piqued his interest. “We could take a walk in the woods. I know this really awesome place...” He trailed off. Wait, no... Humans didn’t like the woods. Most of them were terrified of it, scared that they would get torn apart by the creatures within it. Joel on the other hand loved it there. It was so quiet, so peaceful. No busy streets, no honking cars and loud people. “We don’t have to though,” he added quickly. “Just... a thought.”

Carla didn’t miss a bit of the surprise in his face when asked her if she drive. She could play around with that a little and lie but that wouldn’t be a very good start. After all this was their second go at being nice to one another so she smiled at him. It wasn’t a true smile like one’s Hale got out of her, but it was better than anything else she had been pulling out lately. “Yup for about three years now.” She said pushing her hands back into her pockets where her fingers played with the ring of keys. She was still leaning on the car look at Joel, her one foot was crossed slightly over the other one. Her heel was touching the ground but that was about it.
Joel then said it was totally fine that Carla was bad and awkward about this whole hanging out thing. She felt a lot better about it now. She had just forced him to come and chill with her, but it was the only thing she could come up with to make things up to him. If she didn’t do this she would still feel bad about it. Sorry wasn’t enough for Carla she had been like this for a very long time. Only as Carla looked Joel over again as he spoke she frowned a little. “Really?”
Joel was what most girls would call ‘good looking’ with that blond hair, thin but strong build and blue eyes. Sure he was a little older then Carla but really she could see him being a little like Hale, just far better than him. Seeing as Hale could easily be with a different girl every night if he wanted to. The idea made Carla sick, but she pushed past that. “What do you do that makes you not a hang out person?” She asked feeling interested in this. Most of the time Carla was easy to pick out things about people, since she was so invisible and had the time and skills to learn a lot about a person by just being in the room with them.
It wasn’t that she was an eavesdropper, she just easily over hear what people are talking about. Today people have no brains about things they want to keep secret, they about it out in the open, with an outside voice. It was partly the reason things seemed to move around the world so fast. No one could keep their bloody mouth shut. Stupid, stupid people.
Just then Carla spanned out of her thoughts and back to Joel and the ideas of where to go. The woods? She had never been in there before. For more than one reason. Only with Joel being strong and seemed to know something about the woods she could go. . . then again she really didn’t like the idea of being alone in the woods with a male. It sent a small shiver down her back. Shaking the feeling and thoughts away she pushed herself up and off the car by her one heel on the door of the car. “Works for me, could be interesting.” She said putting up a fake smile and turned around to get in the car. She hit the button and unlocked it all.
“Hope you don’t mind my slow driving.” She said with a short laugh. She knew she wasn’t a slow driver, she just was different from Hale and her mother. Both were speed demons and always picked on Carla for going to damn slow.
((Sorry about wait. life hates me right now))

“What do you do that makes you not a hang out person?” I’m a fucking monster. Yeah, Joel wasn’t sure how to answer that question. He didn’t want to give Carla a reason to dislike him, no, fear him. She had seemed scared enough last night, and that was without knowing anything about him being a werewolf. Joel imagined telling her that would send her away screaming. Well, either that or she would just laugh and not take it seriously. Not everyone here believed in vampires and werewolves. To some, they were just a myth, as well as the hunters. It was surprising, but a lot of people here had hardly heard anything about the legends that surrounded the old town.
“I’m just not the outgoing type,” Joel said with a shrug, eyes studying the black pavement under his feet. It wasn’t a lie. He was actually rather shy. Though, maybe shy wasn’t the right word. More like withdrawn. Isolated. “I’m not really into parties and all that,” he added. “Haven’t been in this town long either.” Now that was kind of a lie. I mean, to him it didn’t feel that long. But a few years was just a tiny dot on the timeline of life for a werewolf. To a human, it might be a while, but to him it was nothing. “Don’t know many people.” The last part was true. Though he had lived here a while, his social life was still an utter failure. He planned to keep it that way.
Much to Joel’s surprise, Carla agreed to visit the woods. He hadn’t expected her to agree so quickly. Then again, she did seem to be trying hard. He could tell that she wanted to make her rudeness up to him. However, he was uncertain if she was actually doing it for his benefit or just to ease the guilt she was feeling toward how she had acted toward him. Oh well, either way, it seemed they were headed to the woods now. Joel was just relieved she hadn’t suggested anywhere else. A lot of the people around here liked to the restaurants, which Joel hated mainly because of the loud buzz of talking hurt his sensitive ears.
As Carla unlocked the car, Joel pulled the door open and hopped inside, swinging himself into the seat and pulling the door shut behind him in one swift move. “Hope you don’t mind my slow driving.” Joel glanced over at Carla and then out the side window of the car. “Don’t worry about it,” he said quietly. “It’s better than walking.” He wasn’t sure what they would talk about on their way to the woods. God, Joel sucked at this kind of thing. And now that they were in the car, the atmosphere had seemed to change a little. He rolled down the window as if that would help.
